How long does treatment last? The first one or two sessions will be used to gather history about the patient and determine whether the patient would derive benefit from EMDR. If the patient and therapist decide that EMDR would be beneficial, sessions for EMDR will be scheduled. A standard EMDR sessions lasts approximately 50-60 minutes. The complexity of the case will be the determining factor in the length of the sessions. Sometimes, only one session of EMDR is needed; however, it is more common for treatment to last 3-10 weeks with one session every 1-2 weeks. EMDR can be used in conjunction with standard therapy.
What happens during the session? During a typical EMDR session, the therapist helps the client identify a particularly stressful, traumatic or disturbing situation. While the client focuses their thoughts on the chosen situation, the therapist guides the client's eyes in directional movement or other bilateral brain stimulation. Eye movement sets are continued until the client's thoughts about the situation become less disturbing and more positive. As with any form of therapy, a client may experience strong emotions and feelings.
Does insurance cover EMDR? Our clinic is out of network with most insurance companies. If you have out of network mental health benefits and your benefits include psychotherapy, your EMDR sessions will be covered in accordance with your plan guidelines. EMDR is billed as a psychotherapy session.
How does EMDR work? EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is used to make traumatic or stressful memories less upsetting and disturbing for the patient. By using repeated combinations of directional eye movement while the patient is concentrating on a disturbing memory, the therapist is able to assist the patient in making the memories less upsetting.
